Entomology pins are specifically designed to be longer and sharper than an ordinary pin and come in a variety of thicknesses/sizes.Why do we only offer them in stainless steel? Stainless steel pins are chosen by professionals over the black enameled pins for their superior resistance to moisture and rust. Even though insects are dried during the mounting process, their bodies retain moisture for quite some time which can cause painted pins to rust, making your collection unsightly and the pins non-reusable. Our stainless steel pins eliminate that concern and we have priced them at enameled pin prices. We offer them in the 2 most popular sizes, #1 and #3. (we suggest dealers carry both sizes, as each collector or instructor has their own preference) The #1 pins are thinner than the #3s and are therefore better suited for smaller insect specimens. The #3s are a bit stiffer and are ideal for medium to larger insects. (approx. 100 pins packaged in each re-usable container)

After insects are captured, the collector needs to prepare them to be added to their collection. This process is called 'spreading' them as the specimens are spread apart or positioned to reveal their beauty, characteristics and uniqueness.
To do this a 'spreading board' is used to pin and hold the specimen in position until they have dried and become ridged in the desired position. For that purpose we offer this inexpensive kit which includes all of the items needed to spread insect specimens for display and study.
